Did you know that young children laugh an average of 400 times a day. When we become adults the number of laughs per day dwindles to a not so amusing total of 5. If we as adults increased our daily chuckle quota, we’d do a lot better as laughter really is a wonderful medicine! In Qigong laughter is called the “second heart” because the pumping action it causes in the diaphragm boosts the body’s blood flow. A good belly laugh also helps the lymphatic system to remove toxins from the body. It reduces stress, increases oxygen intake, strengthens the immune system and best of all, it makes us happy and helps us to connect with people.
On a more scientific level, laughter stimulates your mind, emotion and body to release a variety of “feel good” chemicals from endorphins to dopamine and oxytocin. Laughter also helps to flush out any variety of toxins that may be floating around in your body by highly oxygenating your blood supply and increasing your blood flow. In fact, laughter can be quite the cardio workout.
Heal yourself, connect and relax with laughter. Should be more of it really!
